This "voicing" issue leads me to question what type hurdy-gurdy I
have among the various nationalities and pitches. String length, compared
to what I've been reading, tells me possibly this is an alto. It is built
on plans for a 15th c. style instrument from a reliable luthier. The body
is lute-shaped in outline, but (almost) flat-backed. The tuning head is a
box open to the body cavity and at its end, allowing the sound to emanate in
good volume; no sound holes in the top. Here are the specs:

body length 52 cm
body width 38 cm
body depth 10 cm

Chanterelle 44 cm
Bourdons 46 cm

Other specifics: Chanter is d above middle c, but the tuning is in g major,
giving me a fourth below tonic. No trompette. Bourdons are g, d, G. It
is, I believe, fairly loud, compared to recordings I've heard with HG and
voice or other instruments.

        Any ideas?

Thanks and regards,
Leonard Williams
