Hello,

IMHO "all octaves" drones are boring, you really need a fifth (dominant) drone

depends on what you intend to play. there is quite some repertoire that does not allow octaves *plus* fifths in the drones. Mainly if the root changes within a tune, usually from the drone as root to the drone as fifth. Some french bourrees do this (changes between Dm and G mixo for example), or zwiefache which are usually played alternating in two keys (like G and C). In both cases octaves plus fifths in the drones do not work as the fifth to the drone would become secund in the other key (like D+A in G mixo). Consequently central french pipes (and many other forms of pipes) have octaves only (*or* fifths only) drones.

regarding the g trompette: a well made low g (violin g) trompette is a serious alternative. If the chien is good its buzz is bright enough.

kind regards

Simon
