On the subject of cranks and handles. What is the optimum length of the crank. I'm just about to launch into making another gurdy. I had a very long crank on my first gurdy (95mm between centres). This I thought would give me more control over the buzzes. I now have a 60mm (between centres) crank which is less stress on your arm when playing. The buzzes still come out OK. Is 60mm the standard length?.

I would recomend 65 to 70 mm what is quite close to be a standard. This is a typical lenght for most "french" type instruments and is good for the common coup de 4 with passive hand technique. Hungarian instruments usually have shorter cranks by standard. The one I've got here has 42 mm. This short handles are good for hungarian right hand technique and quite unsuitable for coup de 4 with passive hand.
