I asked if any of the instruments got played and was
told. No you don't do anything to collectable instruments because that
ruins
the value as collectables.
If their value as "collectables" is higher than their value as played
instruments that simply means that some very silly people have outbid the
musicians who would like to restore and play these instruments. The "value"
inheres in some idiotic standard that the "collectors" themselves have
invented.
I don't know about hurdy gurdies, but if you don't play a violin or a harp,
even if it is otherwise kept in perfect repair, tuned regularly, etc, it
dies. The wood forgets how to vibrate and the sound becomes lifeless.
Fortunately, if you play them again after even years of neglect they can
come alive again.
