It's not a matter of players wanting to remove the wheel but rather of having the wheel set up so that it can be removed without taking the instrument apart. You might want to do this, for example, if the wheel is damaged or if you need to get in through the slot to service the axle in the event of something going wrong. But in normal usage I don't know of any players who remove the wheel except to service the instrument.
