Given many such relationships, I have created a abstract CustomType using which one can create a customType quickly for each table hierarchy. I am not sure how many developers use such relationships but I believe this abstract custom type would be a useful addition and would like to contribute that back to hibernate (with the necessary documentation of course :) )
