there is an "effective-date" field and depending on what the date> you are interested in decides on which record is considered current.
You might want to check out Martin Fowler's "Patterns for things that change with time" at http://www.martinfowler.com/ap2/timeNarrative.html. He describes a few ways of accomplishing this. There's nothing hibernate-specific (or Java-specific), but the data models are interesting.
