Max and I both agree that this is a very desirable feature. Actually we don't even need aliases to support select new map(...). We could just use the propety names.

This really isn't necessary, but sometimes it would be nice to know the metadata of the returned results.
SO rather than returning a List of Maps it could return an Object that implements List that contains Maps but it also implements a metadata interface to allow extraction of the column names, types and any other metadata that would be important.
Oh I get it. Query.getReturnTypes() ?
