What I had in mind was annotations in each entity class, that served as
replacement for the mapping files. By treating the annotations as just a
preprocessing step, one could continue develop the mapping xml without
diverge from the annotations, just make some adjustments.

JDK5 is great, but I'm convinced it will take several years before
everyone has jumped into it. In the meantime Hibernate need to support
both jdk5 as well as older jdks.

If the task is in it's early stage, I might be able to contribute.

I have started to browse around in HibernateExt/metadata.

It seems to me that the cfg package (more or less) is duplicated.
I was looking for a simple solution like,
addClass reads the annotations and produces a dom4j object that
then was feeded into Configuration.add(org.dom4j.Document doc)

Am I missing something here?

Work has started, some early code is in HibernateExt in CVS. Not really
usable though.
