STATE minister for environment Lt. Gen. Abubaker Jeje Odongo has
backed the Muslim leaders' stand on the Domestic Relations Bill
(DRB).
"Those who want to pass the bill should understand that it is aimed
at distorting our society. As Muslims, we should be given chance to
explain ourselves better over the bill. We do not want to create
disharmony in this country," Odongo said yesterday.
He was meeting Mufti Sheikh Shaban Ramdathan Mubajje and the Muslim
parliamentary caucus at Old Kampala over the DRB.
Odongo said "I am proud to be a Muslim. As Muslims MPs with the
guidance and leadership of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC),
we will struggle to protect the beliefs of Islam and rights of
Muslims. The UMSC and the Muslim community should stand firm on
position taken on the bill," he said. He commended the UMSC for
fighting for unity among Muslims.
Mubajje asked the MPs to fight for the rights of the Muslims, saying
they were ministers and MPs for a short period but Islam came first.
Mubajje said the bill was being transformed from the defeated
western culture because Africa has become a dumping place.
