Australian Muslims Decry Detention, Questioning Powers
SYDNEY, June 7, 2005 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) – Australian Muslims have decried anti-terror security measures as creating a climate of fear and apprehension among the Muslim minority in the country.
"We want to live in a country where I feel proud to be Australian, belong to this land, where I have rights like any other persons," Ali Roude, the deputy chairman of the Islamic Council of New South Wales, told a parliamentary panel reviewing the measures on Monday, June 6.

Manufacturing 'Terrorists'

As very few, if any, real terrorists have turned up, the FBI has resorted to creating terrorists by soliciting Muslim-Americans and appealing to them with schemes to aid "jihadists." Recently, two American citizens were caught in a FBI sting. One, an Ivy-League educated physician, is charged with agreeing to provide medical care to wounded holy warriors in Saudi Arabia. The other, a famous jazz musician, is charged with agreeing to train jihadists in martial arts.

On the June 5 edition of NBC's Meet the Press, moderator Tim Russert questioned but failed to correct Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman's claim that the "findings" of the Downing Street Memo, a secret British intelligence memo suggesting that the Bush administration manipulated intelligence to support its case for war in Iraq, "have been totally discredited by everyone who's looked at it," including the 9-11 Commission and the Senate.
In fact, neither the 9-11 Commission nor the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence addressed the Bush administration's use of pre-war intelligence.

Time falsely claimed that Geneva Conventions protect only POWs
In an article purporting to "make sense of the latest Gitmo controversies," Time magazine reporters Daniel Eisenberg and Timothy J. Burger falsely asserted that because "[t]he U.S. considers none of the detainees [held at Guantànamo Bay, Cuba] prisoners of war," this "means they do not enjoy rights under the Geneva Convention". But while the United States has not classified the Guantànamo detainees as POWs, non-POWs are also entitled to protection under the Geneva Conventions. In fact, legal experts have concluded that the conventions provide varying levels of protection to all persons in enemy hands.
