PRESENTS A TALK ON

HELPING THE SRI LANKAN MUSLIM CHILDREN IN RESPECT TO THEIR EDUCATION

SPEAKER: DR. HARYATI SHAHRIMA

DATE: FRIDAY 15th JULY, 2005

TIME: 8.15 P.M.

VENUE: RICOI @136A JLN BURHANUDDIN HELMI

TAMAN TUN DR ISMAIL, KUALA LUMPUR

When it comes to education, Muslims in Sri Lanka have always been on the losing side. They constitute 8% of the total population of the country but have seldom got more than 2.5% of the places available in the government-funded public universities since the country’s independence in 1948. Discrimination in allocation of seats, looting of existing facilities in Muslim schools by armed gangs, forceful displacement of Muslims from the North by the LTTE overnight and reducing them to mere destitute and poor for the last 15 years are some of the reasons for the educational predicaments of Sri Lankan Muslims. The situation was further aggravated with the Tsunami. Nearly 60% of the Tsunami victims in Sri Lanka were Muslims. It killed thousands of children and destroyed hundreds of Muslim schools. The situation of Sri Lankan Muslims may even become worse in the near future as it is understood that this worst affected community was excluded from getting a share of the US$3bn promised by the international community to help the Tsunami victims.

Dear Brothers and Sisters let us come together to help this community at least in its effort to educate its young members. Let us share with them the ni’mah that Allah s.w.t. has bestowed on us.
