A slap at loyal Catholics

In a blatant show of arrogance, the Toledo Catholic Diocese just doesn't
get it. It has allowed a priest who served 21 months in prison for
possessing child pornography to move back into a church-owned apartment
near Corpus Christi University Parish. There's more: The diocese continued
to keep him on the payroll while he was incarcerated.

That's a slap in the face to parishioners who have been asked to believe
the church isn't coddling molesters.

They Just Never Meant Very Much To Us

Samples From An Ocean Of Suffering

The truth is that we are trained to value the lives of our countrymen more
highly by a socio-political system that has much to gain from a restricted,
patriotic version of compassion, and much to lose from an excess of popular
concern for suffering inflicted on ’foreigners’ by our governments and
corporations.

The Globalization of State Terror

The expression of Bush's maligned vision is now evident everywhere; from

to the cement abutments enclosing the White House. The rising wave of
militarism has been accompanied by an equal and opposite retreat in civil
liberties and personal freedom.

Where Is the Moral Outrage?

Perhaps the evangelicals are right -- perhaps America is in a moral free
fall. After relentless media disclosures, Capitol Hill testimony, and the
recent damning "Downing Street Memo," a belated reversal in American public
opinion may be underway. Polls say a slim majority now realizes that we who
opposed the Iraq war from its inception were right: there were no weapons
of mass destruction, Saddam Hussein's noxious regime posed no global
threat, and it was never linked to September 11.

Collateral Damage

Collateral damage: the phrase used by the misnamed Department of Defense to
describe lives and property destroyed as a side effect of actions taken in
the War on Terror. It is also a favorite phrase of pro-war pundits and
bloggers because it sounds so much nicer than "wanton destruction and murder."

The War Is Over, and We...

June 30, 2005, was the peak of neocon delusion. On that day American
Enterprise Institute neocon Karl Zinsmeister posted his article on the AEI
online site titled: "The War Is Over, and We Won."

No sooner than Zinsmeister put delusion to paper than U.S. military
commanders reported escalating and more sophisticated insurgency attacks.
Casualties exploded with more deadly bombings, giving meaning to Secretary
of Defense Rumsfeld's projection of a 12-year war. The Congressional Budget
Office estimated that the conflict's cost may exceed $700 billion.
