All the children - some under a year old - survived their ordeal in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. They were buried in two-feet deep graves and covered with dirt while a prayer was said. Police have been trying for years to stamp out the risky "festival of the pits". Parents face a £60 fine and up to three years in jail for putting their children through the 400-year-old ritual. Devotees believe it protects them from serious illnesses. The festival takes place every two years.
