"If this were a dictatorship..."
...it would be a heck of a sight easier. Just so long as I'm the dictator :
- Americans can now be spied on, without their knowledge, by the US intelligence services.
- Protest within sight or sound of the leader is banned. Protesters are "allowed" to protest (after providing their names and details to the police in advance) in wired off compounds.
- The leader is seeking the right to declare martial law within the United States whenever he feels like it and send in the military to enforce that status.
- etc....

Uri Avnery: On Crusaders and Zionists
He is a familiar hero in literature: the compulsive gambler who hits a lucky streak. With every turn of the roulette wheel, the heap of jetons in front of him grows bigger. He could leave the table, exchange the jetons for money and live on it happily ever after.
But he cannot stop. He must continue. Slowly his luck changes. The heap in front of him is getting steadily smaller. He can still leave and avoid disaster. But he is a compulsive gambler. He must go on, until the last jeton is swept up by the croupier, together with all his earthly possessions.

US televangelist says Venezuela threatens US with nuke
"I apologized and I said I will be praying for him, but one day we will be staring nuclear weapons and it won't be (Hurricane) Katrina facing New Orleans, it's going to be a Venezuelan nuke," Robertson said.
"So my suggestion was, isn't it a lot cheaper sometimes to deal with these problems before you have to have a big war," he added.
Pat, what part of "Thou shalt not kill" do you not understand?

United States is home to a booming business in anti-Americanism
SEATTLE: A T-shirt with a Warholian likeness of U.S. President George W. Bush sports the incendiary legend "International Terrorist." Another shows the World Trade Center towers with the words, "What Goes Up Must Come Down." These are just some of the provocative - some would say anti-American - items for sale at Left Bank Books Collective, in the liberal and frequently outspoken U.S. West Coast city of Seattle.

A Central Pillar of Iraq Policy Crumbling
Bush's administration has insisted that political progress would quell the insurgency. But the reverse may be true, U.S. analysts say.

When Torture becomes Policy
President Bush has made it clear that he will veto the $435 billion Pentagon appropriations bill because it restricts his ability to abuse prisoners in the war on terror. The bill, which forbids the "cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment" of prisoners in US custody, was passed by an overwhelming 90 to 9 majority in the Senate.
