After Saddam, it is clear that the Iraqi people are still being tortured

Remove All Torturers from Power

Scott Galindez writes that the Bush administration and those who support the Iraq war frequently justify it by saying that Saddam Hussein tortured his people. They say that Iraq is better off without him. He agrees that Saddam needed to go, but with the reports from Abu Graib and other US-run prisons, it is clear that the Iraqi people are still being tortured.

Afghanistan A Disaster: Four Years After US Invasion

October 7th 2001, the US forces with their cowardly allies bombed Afghanistan, the poorest nation on earth with no comparable military defense. The magnitude of this tragedy is beyond words to describe here. However, the perpetrator of this crime - George W Bush - appears to be a psychopath suffering from serious psychosis when he bluntly stated the reason for his decision to invade Afghanistan. A new BBC documentary reveals that GW Bush has made a bizarre claim when meeting the Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas and former foreign minister Nabil Shaath Egyptian resort of Sharm al-Sheikh in 2003. Bush's outrageous claim could not be explained by anything except psychopathology.

Catholic Church no longer swears by truth of the Bible, says some parts of the Bible are not actually true

THE hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true.

The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect "total accuracy" from the Bible.

Wasn't Jesus a Liberal?

The fact that Christian leaders are not calling the policies of this government into righteous accountability is what troubles me the most. They went out on the limb with their endorsements and yet they still give this inept and misguided president carte blanche. Where is the voice of the true prophet? Why do they still blindly support him and his policies of greed and war?

In case you missed it: Wasn’t Jesus A Liberal?

I am sick of reading letters to the editor and editorials that paint Democrats and liberals as anti-God and anti-American and that portray conservative Republicans as the only true Christian patriots.

'Fake' Photos Emerge in Abu Ali Case, doctor's evidence suggests he is being tortured by US Gov't

The next hearings for a 24-year-old Virginia man alleged to have plotted to kill the president are scheduled to get underway this week. Ahmed Omar Abu claims her was tortured while Saudi authorities held him nearly two years. Abu-Ali was last in court at the end of August. On that day, it became apparent that the defense would have to prove that Abu-Ali was tortured and all confessions for planned terror attacks were extracted under duress.

The War on Terror" - in Translation

When the Bush administration fires off a new round of speechifying about “the war on terror,” the U.S. press rarely goes beyond the surface meanings of rhetoric provided by White House scriptwriters. But the president’s big speech at the National Endowment for Democracy on Oct. 6 could have been annotated along these lines:

* “We will not tire or rest until the war on terror is won.” Translation: This is a war that can go on forever.

Americans see BUSH as a Bigger Problem than TERRORISM!

The headline of the latest CBS News Poll was Bush Ratings Hit New Low - only 37% approve while 58% disapprove. Bush is on his way to becoming the Most Hated President in American history.

As I read through the results, one number really struck me: the "most important problem" facing the U.S.

Four Years for Talking Without a Permit? The Fight for Free Speech at Union Square

Joshua Frank, who published "NYPD Unplugs Cindy Sheehan" on CounterPunch http://www.counterpunch.org./frank09212005.html should be commended for focusing on the question of free speech in Union Square, but his assessment of the political environment in this important battleground is way off. Those to whom he dismissively refers as "wannabe Abbie Hoffmans" are in fact a wide range of different types of dissenters.

Bush's Veil Over History

SECRECY has been perhaps the most consistent trait of the George W. Bush presidency. Whether it involves refusing to provide the names of oil executives who advised Vice President Dick Cheney on energy policy, prohibiting photographs of flag-draped coffins returning from Iraq, or forbidding the release of files pertaining to Chief Justice John Roberts's tenure in the Justice Department, President Bush seems determined to control what the public is permitted to know. And he has been spectacularly effective, making Richard Nixon look almost transparent.

The Dark Cloud of Democracy

The constitution, if implemented, paves the way for secession of territories, leading the way to an oil rich Kurdistan in the North, a southern Shia state also controlling great oil wealth, and a western area, war torn and without resources, left for Sunnis to rebuild after a brutal and heavily damaging occupation.

The Trouble with Authority

Should just people obey unjust laws?

In our desire to appear reasonable we have lost the willingness to fight for what is good and decent. We have marginalized and prostituted ourselves. We cannot expect any help from either the Democratic or the Republican parties—they are a part of the problem.

We Can’t Let "It" Happen Here

What is beyond the looking glass?

Over a year ago, the comfort of my world severely diminished as I took my journey through the looking glass and discerned the ugly truths about the nation of my birth, the United States of America. “Logic and proportion” certainly seemed to have “fallen softly dead” when I discovered that much of what I had learned about my country as a child had been a lie.

FLASHBACK: Was TWA 800 Shot Down By a Military Missile?

Apparently Leon Panetta just stated on TV that TWA 800 was a terrorist attack. Of course, he does not explain why the US Government would cover up a terror attack since they get so much mileage from them, but be that as it may, Panetta's statement justified a looking back at that horrible night, and a look why the terrorist claim never did make sense.

You May be Brainwashed by Corporate Media if You:

... believe the 5 corporations who own almost all of the media in the U.S. are liberal.
... believe $300 billion of U.S. tax money, allocated for the war and reconstruction in Iraq is actually going to Iraq .
... are unaware Iraq had 650 million barrels of oil in reserve just before the war in Iraq .

The Troops Don’t Support the Constitution

Every U.S. soldier takes an express and solemn oath to “support and defend the Constitution.” That oath, however, is a sham because the troops do not support or defend the Constitution. Instead, when it comes to war the troops follow another oath they take — to obey the orders of the president, and they do this without regard to whether such orders violate the Constitution.

A textbook example involves President Bush’s war on Iraq.
