Sekian, terima kasihDAILY EXPRESS NEWS-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sabah owes RM1.2b to water suppliers 20/10/2005 Kuala Lumpur: The Sabah Government owes about RM1.21 billion to three water supply concessionaires up to September this year, said Energy, Water and Communication Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik. He said the debts included fixed monthly payments amounting to RM752.73 million, bulk supply rates totalling RM212.30 million and interest on outstanding payments (RM254.61 million). "The Ministry was also informed that the Sabah Government could only afford to settle a third of the debts every year," he said when winding up the debate on Budget 2006 for his Ministry at the Dewan Rakyat. He said the debts were aggravated by the imbalance between income and expenditure, with the Sabah Water Department (JAS) only managing to collect RM91.517 million compared to the operating expenditure of RM212.873 million last year. "This means that JAS experienced a deficit of RM121.356 million (including RM56 million payment of bulk supply rates to concessionaires) last year," he said. Besides that, Dr Lim said the rate of non-revenue water loss in Sabah was high at around 62 per cent last year. The Sabah Government would continue negotiations with the concessionaires to solve the problem. The solutions proposed included re-negotiating with the concessionaires to settle the outstanding debts so that a satisfactory outstanding debt reduction rate could be achieved. Dr Lim said the Government would also hold re-negotiation on the bulk supply rates with the three concessionaires to reduce them to a more reasonable rate. "The Ministry was informed that the negotiations are ongoing between the Sabah Government and the concessionaires with the hope of achieving a single rate for the bulk supply rates and a reasonable total debt reduction agreeable to both parties," he said. - Bernama
