Mission in progress

By: Samer Majzoub

Here we are welcoming eid Elfitr with hearts full of iman boosted by the blessing generated from the month of Ramadan. Many of us could wrongfully welcome this beautiful occasion with immoral doings and incorrect behaviours. We could tend to forget that what we are really celebrating is the end of a month in which people worship and submit to Allah swt.  We are celebrating that God has given us the privilege of witnessing Ramadan benefiting from its kheir and rewards.  And the end of Ramadan should not be considered at any time as if “mission accomplished” where we go back to our “sins” and bad habits that we use to do prior to this holly month.

To reach the internal joy after Ramadan, we should ask ourselves whether we spent this Holly month in ibadaat and repentance or we recited the Quran, or we can even ask ourselves how much we spent in sadakaat, how many times we did qyyaam, did we purify our souls, did we clean our hearts from hatred, did we actually carry out our understanding and belief of the importance of fasting, or Ramadan is only a matter of habits and customs that we just follow without perception of their meanings

The days of `Eid are days of joy, maintaining the ties of kinship, visiting others, and reviving friendly relations with relatives and neighbours.  Enjoying eid is by all means permissible as long as we observe Allah swt through our spending and entertainment.  Our spending in this occasion should be moderate without prodigality or stinginess, for both behaviours are abominable in the sight of Allah. He Almighty says [and eat and drink, but be not prodigal. Lo! He loveth not the prodigals] (Al-A`raf 7:31 ) and [And let not thy hand be chained to thy neck nor open it with a complete opening, lest thou sit down rebuked, denuded] (Al-Israa’ 17:29 ).

The joy of `Eid will never be complete until the Muslim nation is gathered and united, the banner of Islam is raised in all its areas, and the pains and grieves befalling us day and night come to an end.

`Eid evokes in our soul several feelings that appear to be joyful and delightful but, in fact, these feelings conceal deep grief. In what situation will our Muslim brothers and sisters all over the world experience `Eid this year? Do widows, bereaved mothers, and hungry children rejoice in `Eid as we do? .

We are here not to block the delight of eid nor to put down the spirits of this occasion, but rather to remind ourselves that the end of Ramadan is not a “vacation” from Islam but rather It’s a new layer to add up to our lives which should be marked with higher commitment to Islam and a core that remains attached to its Creator.
