ntv7 takeover: More than 10 axed
Kuek Ser Kuang Keng -

Following its takeover by media giant Media Prima Berhad, local television station ntv7 has started a downsizing exercise with contract employees the first to go.

Two ntv7 employees contacted malaysiakini today to say that more than 10 employees including journalists, cameramen and editors had received their termination letters yesterday with one month’s notice effective Dec 12, 2005.

They claimed that no compensation was offered even though some of the employees' contracts only expire in the middle of next year. They were also not consulted or informed over their impending termination, they said.

They added that the decision to terminate them was unfair as the new management had already reached its retrenchment target number through a voluntary separation scheme (VSS) exercise.

They claimed that 300 ntv7 staff had applied for the VSS option, higher than the company’s retrenchment target number of 200.

"The number of VSS applicants has reached the retrenchment target, so why must the management terminate contract employees?" asked one of the affected employees who requested anonymity.

A source from the company’s management confirmed the retrenchment exercise and said the results of the VSS offer would be announced tomorrow.

The sacked employees said they had consulted lawyers adding many were caught by surprise by the move with some breaking down and weeping upon receiving the termination letters at 6 pm.

"The morale of the staff has been deeply affected and the termination of these contract employees further aggravates the situation," they said.

Media Prima CEO Abdul Rahman Ahmad refused to comment when contacted but promised a response by tonight.

Media Prima emerged as the sole owner of all the country's free-to-air television stations after its 100 percent acquisition of the ntv7 Group for a total of RM90 million on Oct 27.

Media Prima owns three other television stations - TV3, 8TV, Channel 9 - and two radio stations, FlyFm and WaFM.

After the acquisition, it is said to be contemplating plans to restructure all four stations to cater for separate audiences.
