Human rights lawyer calls on media to print Muhammad cartoons

One of Canada's leading human rights advocates says Canadian newspapers should publish the controversial Danish cartoons depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad. Montreal lawyer Julius Grey spoke to a classroom packed with 60 law students at the University of Ottawa Tuesday afternoon.

MMN Note: Grey's position is an interesting case of hyprocrisy because as a lawyer himself he knows full well that free speech is not an absolute in Canada. If he truly believes that  "every type of _expression_ should be permitted" then he must also believe that public expressions of hatred against visible minorities, including against his own Jewish community, are acceptable. But in fact, such kind of hateful speech are the seeds for disaster as history has shown us time and again. Does he support  the idea that individual's right to freely express themselves is more important than public safety, especially when as a result of that speech minorities are targeted for hateful and violent crimes? Hate speech is not a right, it is a crime.

Cartoon conflicts

To describe the clash over the Danish depictions of the prophet as one between freedom and dogma will only fan the flames, says Tariq Ramadan

To Danish Muslims denouncing this as an instance of racism - a provocation capitalised upon by the ever expanding far right in the country - my advice was to avoid reacting emotionally, to try to explain quietly why these cartoons were offensive and neither to demonstrate nor to risk activating mass movements that could prove impossible to master. At the time, a resolution seemed to be at hand.

All cartoon politics are local

Muslim outrage reflects specific national conflicts -- most of them exacerbated by Bush's policies.

Feb. 09, 2006 | The global controversy over the Danish caricatures of the prophet Mohammed continued to spin out of control this week, as Iraqis demonstrated for the withdrawal of Danish troops, and Afghans attacked NATO soldiers, leaving four dead and dozens wounded. The dispute has typically been treated in the Western media as a further sign of the fanaticism of Muslims. But the tempest did not arise out of nowhere. Muslim anger has been greatly heightened by the widespread belief that at best the West has treated the Islamic world unjustly and at worst launched a war against it. Moreover, the caricatures have most often been deployed by Middle Easterners and Muslims in disputes with each other -- disputes that have been sharpened by the Bush administration's blundering interventions in the region. Western attempts to cast the issue as one of freedom of _expression_ display an ignorance of the local context of these conflicts, which are not mostly about religion so much as they are about religious nationalism and about power struggles within Muslim societies.

Neocons slam Bush for criticizing offensive cartoons

WASHINGTON -- Supporters of the Iraq war are slamming the Bush administration for criticizing the publication of cartoons that triggered a wave of riots in the Arab and Muslim world.

The critics, including pro-war pundits Daniel Pipes and Christopher Hitchens, are saying that the administration should have taken stronger steps to condemn the violent reactions. They also contend that the administration should have emphasized its support for the right of the Danish newspaper to publish the inflammatory caricatures of Islam's main prophet, Muhammad -- and the right of other publications that reprinted them -- rather than stress understanding for Muslims who felt offended.

Police increase security at Laval mosques

Police have increased security around two mosques in the Laval area that were vandalized early Tuesday morning. Someone smashed windows at the Islamic Cultural Centre and the Al-Hissane Islamic Centre and police believe the vandalism may have been a reaction to ongoing violence in the Middle East over the publication of Danish cartoons featuring the prophet Muhammad.

Meanwhile, some Muslim community leaders in Quebec are asking people to avoid a demonstration against the cartoons planned for this Saturday in Montreal.

A LETTER OF PROTEST OVER CARTOONS FOR THE DANISH GOVERNMENT - ON BEHALF OF MUSLIMS IN JAPAN

We are submitting this protest letter for forwarding it to your government.  As displayed by the protests and demonstrations all over the world and by the deaths of some innocent Muslims in Afghanistan, we, the Muslims in Japan as well, in consolidation with them all, have been greatly hurt by the cartoons published in Jyllands-Poston, the largest-circulated daily in your country, later re-published in some other European countries, ridiculing our beloved and most respected Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
