Assalamualaikum Dato/En PRESS STATEMENT The publication of Willie Miller cartoon relating to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him ) by NST on Monday February 20, 2006 and again on Wednesday February 22, 2006 were uncalled for. Although no actual drawing of the beloved Prophet ( peace be upon him) was depicted in the cartoon yet the message of the cartoon itself picturing a street artist soliciting to paint the picture of the holy Prophet (peace be upon him) is a provocative act. Adding salt to injury the cartoon also carry a caption praising the street artist for his bravery. It is strange and unthinkable for an established newspaper organization such as NST would openly defied the called by the Prime Minister to play down such issues in the light of the recent outburst by Muslims against such caricature by a Denmark press. Why did NST purposely adding fuel to the fire? What does NST hope to achieve? What is the rationale? Don't they realize that the Willie Miller cartoon could be miss-interpreted by the Muslims as 'THE Denmark Caricature' and might cause unnecessary anger in the community? Further it would also cause unnecessary anxiety for the non-Muslim community. It is in this light that we from the Islamic Information & Services Foundation (IIS) are of the opinion that the printing of the notorious cartoon by NST threatens national security as it is defamatory and could cause public disturbances as well as undermining national unity. We strongly feel that NST had insulted Islam and Muslims in Malaysia and the world over. We recommend that appropriate action be taken against NST.
