Head of Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq: 200,000
Iraqis have died in three years of US occupation, but media are
concealing the true extent of devastation taking place.

 In a dispatch posted at 9:30pm Makkah time Saturday
night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Dr. Harith ad-Darri, the
Chairman of the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq, the highest Sunni
religious authority in the occupied country, had declared that wholesale
destruction, torture, and murder are being perpetrated in Iraq by the US
and its stooges and that the media are concealing the extent of the
devastation.  Iraq, he said, is a victim of the occupation and the
media cover up.
 The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Shaykh
ad-Darri denounced the  “lackey, hypocritical, and ignorant media”
for concealing the reality of what is taking place in Iraq from the
world.
 Addressing a group of people gathered for the opening of an office
of the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq in Cairo, Dr. ad-Darri said
that more than 200,000 Iraqis have died in the course of the last three
years, “since the feet of the occupation trod on the land of
Iraq.”
 He said that the Americans and many of the Arab media were
concealing the true extent of US losses as well, and noted that those
losses would continue as long as the occupation remained in the
country.
 The Shaykh said that there was no sectarian civil war going on in
Iraq.  “The Shi‘ah are not fighting the Sunnah and the Sunnah are
not fighting the Shi‘ah; it is the Resistance that is fighting the
occupation and its stooges in the lackey political parties that rode in
with the occupation and support its attacks on the Resistance.”
 The occupation has nothing in mind but its own interests, said Dr.
ad-Darri, even if that means at the expense of Iraq and its future. 
Since the Iraqi Resistance is a patriotic Resistance representing the
whole people, the occupation and its supporters spread the claim that the
Resistance consists of Sunnis who are out to kill the Shi‘ah.  “But
the fact is that those who are killing the innocent Sunnis are only the
members of Shi‘i Islamic parties who don’t represent their brother
Shi‘ah.  Those parties that are collaborating with the colonialists
only represent a tiny part of Iraq’s Shi‘ah.  When they were exposed
as bankrupt before the Iraqi people, they started trying to stir up
sectarianism in an attempt to bring other Shi‘ah in to attack the
Sunnis,” Shaykh ad-Darri said.
 Shaykh ad-Darri noted that the Association of Muslim Scholars had
issued a total of 160 statements since they were formed after the
American occupation, 70 of which condemned attacks on civilians and
Shi‘i, Sunni and Christian places of worship.  He said that the
Association condemned the killing of innocent civilians, in particular
since such genuinely terrorist attacks were being falsely attributed to
the Iraqi Resistance which is engaged in a holy struggle against the
occupation.  Islam itself is slandered, he said, when the Resistance
movement is called “terrorist” and blamed for such attacks.
Ad-Darri said that while the Association of Muslim Scholars had denounced
all such incidents, the Shi‘i sectarian groups had only condemned attacks
on their own sites and people.  He pointed out that “when some
people attacked the Sabaean religious minority after leaflets calling on
them to convert to Islam were circulated, the Association of Muslim
Scholars condemned that assault and issued a declaration emphasizing the
teachings of Islamic law and [quoting the Qur’an] that ‘there can be no
compulsion in religion’.”
The head of the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq expressed the hope
that his country would not long languish in its present unfortunate
state.  “Iraq will emerge triumphant, God willing,” he said. 
“This is what Iraqis all are looking forward to, Sunnah and Shi‘ah
alike.  They have struggled and are continuing to struggle for the
day when the sun will rise and the nightmare of the American occupation
will be over and gone, and their unlamented soldiers will have departed
home to their own country.”
