Currently 5 Muslim men have had "security certificates" issued against them, with one, Adil Charkaoui out on bail, and another, Mohamed Harkat, awaiting the government's appeal of his bail. These 5 men have NEVER been charged with any crime. They are being held indefinitely without ever being allowed to see the alleged evidence that the government claims exists against them. Canada is throwing out the very rights, freedoms, and values it purports to be protecting in order to, the government claims, protect those same rights, freedoms, and values. Furthermore, the timing of the so-called "terror" arrests in Ontario is also being questioned in regards to the "security certificates" trial. That a two-year police operation would culminate in mass arrests and near unprecedented media coverage just one week before the Supreme Court date for the "security certificates" appears to be more than just a coincidence. The campaign of media hysteria now threatens to undermine both a fair trial for the 17 accused in Ontario as well as compromise the outcome of the totally unrelated issue of trial without charge or possible defense ("security certificates"). So, this Tuesday, June 13 at 4pm, United Students for Justice will be holding a mediatized demonstration at the Roddick Gates at the corner of McGill College and Sherbrooke Streets.
