A good friend of mine who happens to wear a hijab was in the OC Transpo bus last Friday on her way home when a lady beside her tried to take it off her. My friend asked her to stop, and the lady said she didn't like hijabs, adding that if my friend did not take it off, she should move elsewhere on the bus.
When my friend pointed out that no other seats were available, and that perhaps the woman should move herself, the woman told my friend to go and stand up on the back of the bus, away from her.
Now, I write this to express my anger at this narrow-minded woman, blatantly promoting hate and racism.
Two questions bother me. First, the bus was full. What were the other people in the bus doing that no one stood up for the freedom, equality and multiculturalism supposed to be woven in the fabric of Canadian society?
Second, if the police had been called, what could have been done? What is the best way to deal with a situation like this? What can be done to ensure that one does not get away with this type of treatment of a fellow human being?
This is not the first time this has happened. A similar situation took place, with the same friend, in the grocery store about two months ago.
Tell me, what can we do?
