Most-wanted Chechen Mujahideen Leader Basayev killed
By JUDITH INGRAM, Associated Press Writer 29 minutes ago
MOSCOW - Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, the purported author of modern Russia's worst terrorist attacks, was killed Monday, the head of the Federal Security Service said.

FSB head Nikolai Patrushev told President Vladimir Putin that Basayev had been killed overnight in Ingushetia a republic bordering Chechnya that was plagued by sporadic spillover violence from the separatist region. Patrushev's meeting with Putin was shown on Russian state television.
Basayev, 41, claimed responsibility for some of Russia's worst terror attacks, including the seizure of some 800 hostages in a Moscow theater in 2002, the 2004 school hostage taking in Beslan that killed 331, and the seizure of about 1,000 hostages at a hospital in Budyonnovsk that killed about 100.
Patrushev told Putin that the Chechen rebels had hoped to "put political pressure on the Russian leadership" during the Group of Eight summit later this week, which Putin is chairing.
Putin called Basayev's killing "deserved retribution" for terrorist attacks in Beslan and Budyonnovsk, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported.
The attack on the Beslan school shocked Russia and divided the rebel movement, since civilians, including women and children, were taken hostage.
Basayev was the boldest and most notorious of the Chechen warlords. Another rebel leader, Doku Umarov, pledged last month that rebels would step up their attacks against Russian forces.
Patrushev said the operation to eliminate Basayev, in which many other rebels were killed, was "thanks to the operative position abroad, especially in those countries where arms were
collected."
Rebel-connected Web sites did not immediately comment on Patrushev's claim.
Alu Alkhanov, president of the Kremlin-backed government in Chechnya, said the killing likely would undermine the Chechen rebel movement irreparably.
"I consider that today can be considered the date of the logical end of the fight against illegal armed formations," he said, according to the news agency Interfax.

Shamil Basayev is killed, official source says
It is not the first time, when the Chechen warlord is said to be killed
An official source confirmed rumors about the killing of infamous Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev. The terrorist was killed in an incidental shootout between Chechen and Arab hirelings, a high-ranking Abkhazian official said.
The above-mentioned armed clash took place in January. Shamil Basayev and his terrorists supposedly found themselves in the middle of a shootout between a group of Chechen gunmen and international mercenaries. The conflict reportedly occurred because of embezzlement of the funds assigned for jihad.
According to another version, Basayev was killed in one of ongoing never-ending battles with Russian federal troops. This version was particularly discussed in the Chechen diaspora of Azerbaijan, Utro.Ru reports.
Spokespeople for Russian special services were not rather enthusiastic in their comments regarding the killing of the Chechen terrorist. It was simply said that the information would have to be checked. It is worth mentioning that it is not the first time, when the Chechen warlord is said to be killed. Shamil Basayev has already managed to resurrect several times.
Deputy Chairman of the State Security Service of Abkhazia, Yuri Ashuba, has recently released another statement on the matter. There are certain rumors about Basayev's death, although one may not say that they are widespread rumors. They can be heard from the people, who were in contact with Basayev during the war between Georgia and Abkhazia in 1992-1993, the official said.
Ashuba also added that one of the terrorists' wives (she is of Abkhazian origin)
reportedly learned about her husband's death from Chechnya at the end of January. According to Ashuba, there is another version about Basayev's death: Chechnya's prime terrorist supposedly died of a chronic kidney disease.
Shamil Basayev, has been charged with tens of terrorist acts committed on the territory of Russia. The Nord-Ost hostage crisis in the Moscow music theater was considered the most dreadful one of them, but the attack of the theatre paled in comparison with the tragedy in Beslan.

Who is Shamil Basayev? Its a shame if we didnt know one of our commanders of mujahideen...
Shamil Salmanovich Basayev (Russian: Øàìèëü Ñàëìàíîâè÷ Áàñàåâ) (January 14, 1965 - July 10, 2006) was a Chechen separatist vice-president, guerrilla leader, self-admitted terrorist, and one of Chechnya's most famed contemporary national heroes. Since 2003, Basayev also used the pseudonym and title Abdallah Shamil Abu-Idris, Amir of the Brigade of Shahids 'Riyadus Salihiin'".
Shamil Basayev was responsible for numerous guerilla attacks in and around Russia, made famous by the media were the Moscow theatre siege and the Beslan school siege, and was considered undisputed leader of the Chechen resistance. He was a recipient of the highest awards of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria: "K'oman Siy" (honour of the nation) and "K'oman Turpal" (hero of the nation).
He bore the title of Ichkerian Divisional General.

| The fearsome rebel leader has been wanted by Russian authorities for years in connection with bloody attacks in Russia, including the Beslan school hostage siege in September 2004 which left at least 320 people dead.
Shamil Basayev, 41, had long threatened a series of "kamikaze" attacks inside Russia, arguing that Russian civilians were legitimate targets. North Ossetian interior ministry spokesman Ismel Chaov has said of the Beslan siege: "You can assume it was Basayev, because Basayev is behind most of the terrorist acts." He led the first Chechen mass hostage-taking in the southern Russian town of Budyonnovsk in 1995 and he claimed to have organised the seizing of a Moscow theatre in 2002, during which 129 people died. He is
believed to have been behind a stadium bomb attack in Chechnya's capital, Grozny, in May 2004, that killed Moscow-backed President Akhmad Kadyrov. Mr Basayev is said to have organised a series of attacks on government buildings and police stations in neighbouring Ingushetia in June 2004, which left almost 100 people dead. Independence struggle He has also boasted to have trained Chechen female suicide bombers - the infamous "Black Widows" brigade. The fugitive warlord has vowed to fight the Russians at every opportunity and whatever the cost.
"The Chechen nation is involved in the national liberation struggle for its freedom and independence and for its preservation," he said in a statement in September 2004. "It is not fighting to humiliate Russia or destroy it. This world will sooner be set on fire than we refuse to fight for our freedom and independence." He is
suspected of having links with al-Qaeda operatives, although denies ever having met Osama bin Laden. "I have not met Bin Laden. I received no money from him, but I would not have declined the offer," he said in the September statement. He blamed Moscow for the deaths in Beslan, in North Ossetia, which he called a "terrible tragedy" and denied killing any children. "The storming was carried out by the Russian special services, which had planned that from the start," he said in the statement. Guevara poster Shamil Basayev was born in January 1965, in the mountain village of Vedeno. He bears the name of the famous mullah and warrior, Imam Shamil, who led the mountain tribes' resistance
to the Tsarist armies in the last century.
His early career revealed romantic and revolutionary ambitions - he says he had a poster of Che Guevara on his wall as a student in Moscow. He first came to prominence soon after the attempted communist coup d'etat in 1991,
when he hijacked a Russian passenger jet and forced it to land in Ankara in Turkey. There, he demanded a press conference to tell the world what was going on in Chechnya. Mr Basayev went on to become one of the leading commanders of the resistance when Russian forces invaded Chechnya at the end of 1994. "Russia is the last empire: it is built on blood," he said in a BBC interview in 1999. When Russia was forced to withdraw its forces after the first Chechen war ended in 1996, Mr Basayev stood for president, but came second to Aslan Maskhadov - the more moderate separatist leader killed by Russian troops in March 2005. Mr Basayev also served briefly as prime minister in the self-proclaimed independent Chechen republic of Ichkeria in 1997. | |||||
