PM: Let party decide his future
Aug 7, 06

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said that it was up to ruling party Umno to decide the political future of his son-in-law, who had been accused of being the power behind the throne.
Khairy Jamaluddin, 31, a businessman and ambitious emerging politician, has offered to quit politics if he is a liability to the ruling party.
He said that he would step down from his powerful position as Umno deputy Youth chief if that was what party members desired.
When asked to comment on Khairys statement, Abdullah yesterday said that his son-in-law would not have hold the post if the delegates did not want him to continue.
He added that this was the guiding principle for all elected representatives.
If the grassroots that elected them do not want them anymore, they would have to step down. Whoever he is, the principle is the same, said Abdullah.
Newspapers today published a photo of Khairy wiping his tears as he answers a string of allegations made against him during the opening of the Port Klang Umno Youth division general meeting.
No second wife
Last Friday, Khairy denied he had taken a popular television actress as his second wife and blasted what he said were attempts to undermine the government.
Former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has levelled a number of criticisms at his successor in recent weeks, including suggesting that Abdullah's advisors and Khairy were controlling the administration.
But Abdullah said Khairy, who has served his father-in-law in several roles including as speech writer and private secretary, was not influencing him.
Khairy is expected to tour Umno divisions in the country in the next few weeks to answer all the allegations.
"I want to ask the views of Umno youth members at the grassroots level whether I have become a liability to the party based on all the baseless allegations made against me.
"Only those who have given the mandate to be a leader can decide. Nobody else can force someone out," he said.

Khairy: I borrowed RM9.2 mil to buy shares

Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin today clarified that he borrowed money to buy a substantial stake in fledging financial advisory company ECM-Libra.
Khairy, 31, was responding to claims that he became an overnight millionaire which allowed him to buy the shares reportedly worth RM9.2 million, or three percent of the boutique investment banking group.
I borrowed the money ... everything is loaned, not my own money. Luckily, there are people who want to give loans (to
me). I took a loan from them (ECM-Libra) who sold their shares to me, said Khairy, according to Bernama.
Exchange filings showed that Khairy bought 13 million shares at 71 cents per share in three separate transactions from acquaintance and ECM-Libras chairperson Kalimullah Masheerul Hassan, chief executive officer Lim Kian Onn and chief operating officer Chua Ming Huat.
Khairy has been a director of ECM-Libra since July 2004, not long after his father-in-law, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, succeeded Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister.
Last Friday, Mahathir publicly questioned how Khairy had amassed his millions to purchase the shares adding that only a person with money can be allowed to borrow more money from a bank.
Power of the fourth floor
The former premier also alleged that officers occupying the fourth floor of the Prime Ministers Department were associates of Khairy and were highly influential on government policies to the effect that they became the de facto prime minister.
In reply, Khairy said the allegations were baseless as the prime ministers decisions were made collectively in cabinet.
Based on the prime minister's explanation (on the allegations), surely the fourth floor is more powerful than the fifth floor because the cabinet meeting room is on the fourth floor and the cabinet meeting room is more powerful than the prime minister's office because all the ministers are in the cabinet... if this is what is meant, then probably it (the allegation) is right.
To say they are advisers or officers who determine the country's future - this is a very big insult to the prime minister, he said
Prepared to quit
Khairy also expressed his preparedness to quit his post in Umno should he become a liability to the movement, on condition that youth delegates harbour such sentiments.
Only they can decide. Nobody can force a person to leave except those who elected the leader... Leaders carry out delegates mandate. If the leader does not have the credibility or is a liability to an organisation, he cannot cling on to his post. He must realise this.
So I want to seek the views of Umno Youth members at the grassroots whether I've become a liability with all the speculations about me, he told reporters after officiating the Cheras Umno Youth delegates conference today.
Yesterday, Khairy said he would answer all allegations thrown at him as he conducts a whirlwind tour of the country while officiating more than 30 Umno Youth delegates conferences.
He added that allegations had become too personal and as a man of integrity, slanderous remarks against him must be replied immediately.
The ambitious politician also denied rumours that he had taken famous actress Maya Karin as his second wife

Probe Khairys share purchase of ECM-Libra

On Khairy: I borrowed RM9.2 mil to buy shares
BOLH: Khairy said that he borrowed money from certain parties to finance his acquisition of a substantial stake in ECM-Libra. We must not forget that Khairy is linked to the prime minister and he must come clean.
Who are these people who financed him? If these parties truly had financed him, surely there must be some form of collateral to back this loan and such collateral must be greater than or equal to the sum loaned to Khairy. Nobody gives out money for nothing even if you are the son-in-law of the prime minister.
If there is such a collateral, what is it and where did it originate from? If it is from Khairy, then how did he come by with such a collateral of such great amount?
Ibnu Hakeem: Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin clarified that he borrowed money to buy a substantial stake in fledgling financial advisory company ECM-Libra.
Exchange filings showed that Khairy bought 13 million shares at 71 sen per share in three separate transactions from acquaintance and ECM-Libras chairperson Kalimullah Masheerul Hassan, chief executive officer Lim Kian Onn and chief operating officer Chua Ming Huat.

According to Section 131 of the Companies Act, it is illegal for a company to make a loan to anyone (especially a director) to buy its own shares. In this case, ECM Libra is also a financial institution (a so-called investment bank) which means it is also under the purview of the Bafia (Banking and Financial Institutions Act). The Bafia has a few more restrictions than the Companies Act.
Since Khairy has made a public confession, the attorney-general and Bank Negara should investigate if there is any breach of either the Companies Act, the Bafia, or both.
MSY: Is Khairy going to have enough tears for 30 Umno Youth openings? Thats a lot of tears. It seems like this is the method now used by politicians - to weep before the members in order to drum up support. Gone are the days when leaders speak about their vision, their contribution, their principles and what they stand for.
