A documentary depicting the fictional assassination of U.S. President George W. Bush has been described as "shocking" and "disturbing" by Texas members of the Republican Party, according to the BBC. “Death of a President” uses archive footage, actors and computer effects to portray the president as being shot dead.
Gretchen Essell, a spokeswoman for the Texas Republican Party, said the film should not be broadcasted.
"I cannot support a video that would dramatize the assassination of our president, real or imagined," she told the Associated Press news agency.
On the other side, a White House spokesman said of the program: "We are not going to comment because it does not dignify a response."
But John Beyer of the TV watchdog group MediaWatch said the drama was irresponsible and could even spark a real-life assassination attempt.
He added: "There's a lot of feeling against President Bush and this may well put ideas into people's heads."
And Beyer issued a stark warning to the Channel 4 management, saying: "If something happens as a consequence of this film, then blood is on their hands.
Film-makers must understand how much power the media has. For that reason, the film should not be screened."
Peter Dale, head of More4, argued the drama was a "thought-provoking critique" of contemporary U.S. society and a "sophisticated piece of work.” Producers now hope to sell the rights to show “Death of a President” in the U.S.
In the movie, President Bush gets shot by a sniper while arriving in Chicago during an Oct. 7, 2007 anti-war rally. The subsequent investigation quickly focuses on a Syrian-born man.
