Dear colleagues,
There is an email being circulated within and outside PETRONAS claiming
that there is a way to detect 'LPG cylinder expiry date' and that it is
unsafe to use the LPG cylinder after the expiry date.
We would like to point out the following :
There is no such thing as 'LPG cylinder expiry date'. The information is
misleading.
LPG cylinders are requalified at a set frequency to ensure the integrity
of the cylinders and to ensure the cylinders are still meeting PETRONAS
specifications. GAS PETRONAS cylinders are first requalified 9 years
after the manufacturing year. If the cylinders still meet PETRONAS
specifications, they will be injected into the market again and will be
requalified every 6 years thereafter.
Cylinders that fail to meet PETRONAS specfications will be scrapped.
To ensure a high standard and integrity and safety of GAS PETRONAS
cylinders, the requalification exercise practised by PDB is more
stringent than the requirements of MS 830 : 2003, which is 12 years
after the manufacturing year and 10 years thereafter.
Most LPG incidents investigated were due to gas leaks from hoses, loose
connection between the hose and the stove or the hose and the regulator,
faulty regulator or due to incomplete shut off of the stove knob. None
of the LPG incidents was due to 'expired cylinders'.
Kindly contact the undersigned (at ext 16581) or En. Abdul Hisham Mohamad
of LPG Business Division (at ext 16562), should you need any further
clarifications.
Thank you
