Muslim cabdrivers snub fares carrying alcohol
Sun | Oct 01, 06 | 03:07:28 PM
Oleh AP MINNEAPOLIS - Cabdriver Muhamed Mursal doesn't wear his Muslim beliefs on his sleeve, but he may soon broadcast them from a light atop his cab.

Mursal and hundreds of other Muslim cabdrivers at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport refuse to take customers they know are carrying alcohol. They don't search bags, but a wine box may be enough to leave a fare waiting for the next cab.

Now, they may be required to buy different colored lights to sit atop their cabs so airport workers who hook up travelers with taxis can steer alcohol-carrying fares to cabs that will take them. The proposal needs approval from the airport's taxi cab advisory committee, and airport officials hope to have the lights ready by year's end.

Cabbies without the light who refuse fares will be sent to the back of line — often a three-hour wait until it's their turn again for a fare. Drivers said they'd rather wait for another fare than risk punishment in the afterlife.

"It is forbidden in Islam to carry alcohol," Mursal said.

Police investigate Australian mosque shooting
Sun | Oct 01, 06 | 01:42:23 PM
Oleh Hirman SYDNEY - Police and Australia's top spy agency are investigating a drive-by shooting at a mosque in western Australia in which about 400 people were praying, officials said on Saturday.

A single shot was fired through a second-floor window of the mosque in a suburb of Perth, the Western Australian state capital, late on Friday, narrowly missing women and children, police said.

No one was injured and the bullet, said to have been fired from a high-powered rifle, lodged in a wall of the mosque. Witnesses said the shot had been fired from a four-wheel-drive vehicle which sped off after the shooting.

"This action is totally unacceptable and we’ll put all our resources into trying to resolve the issue," acting police commissioner George Loverock told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.

The Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) is joining state security officials and police in investigating the shooting, officials said.

Australia, a U.S. ally with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, has a small Muslim community of about 280,000, or about 1.5 percent of the population.
