Abstract:
This seminar will consider how the political and intellectual life
of the Western World in the twentieth century gave rise to at least
five major theories of learning - behaviourist, developmental,
humanistic, social constructivist and sociocultural. How these
theories have sometimes diverged from each other, sometimes
coalesced and have replaced each other will be considered, as will
the factors which have caused the popularity of each of them to grow
and/or diminish. Finally, Miles talks about the various images that
he personally has held for teaching and learning over the last forty
years of his teaching.
Dr.Miles Barker:
Although, over the last forty years, Miles has pursued science
education and environmental education in every continent except
Antartica. He says that his favourite overseas country is
definitely Malaysia. He has been coming here since 1994, during
which time he has taught on numerous occassions at UM, UNIMAS, UPSI
and RESCAM.
