Demo di KLCC belum bermula, tangkapan dah dibuat!

AKHBAR DI DEPAN KLCC
Tangkapan sudah meningkat lebih 20 orang termasuk wartawan malaysiakini. Tak
pasti pula apakah ada orang awam yang mahu membeli-belah atau lepak-lepak
sekitar KLCC juga ditahan? Penangkapan terhadap wartawan adalah petanda
kezaliman melampau dan gugatan besar terhadap kebebasan bersuara.
KUALA LUMPUR: Belum pun demonstrasi membantah kenaikan harga barang bermula di
KLCC, tangkapan sudahpun dilakukan oleh pihak polis. Difahamkan
sekurang-kurangnya enam orang Unit Amal PAS telah ditahan dan dibawa ke Ibu
Pejabat Polis Kontigen Kuala Lumpur.
Haprak betul pasukan polis yang diperalat dan diperkudakan oleh Umno-BN. Haprak
betul polis di bawah menterinya Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Khabarnya seramai 5 orang muslimat PAS turut ditahan. Juga terbabit wartawan
malaysiakini. Apa cerita ini Dollah, pemberita yang nak buat liputan pun kena
serkup.
Oopp, kawan bagitahu, ada lagi tangkapan .... Memang betul-betul takut Umno-nak
hadapi suara rakyat yang makin menderita dengan keperitan bebanan hidup.
Tak pasti sama ada demo Protes ini dapat dilangsungkan atau tidak. Dulu orang
bercakap di Malaysia ada kebebasan bersuara tetapi tiada kebebasan selepas
bersuara. Sekarang semuanya haprak, nak menuju ke tempat demonstrasi pun tak
boleh, apatah lagi untuk nak sama-sama demo!

Crackdown at KLCC: Dozens picked upFauwaz Abdul Aziz | Jan 26, 08 2:04pmMore
than two dozen individuals have been detained by the police near the Kuala
Lumpur City Centre ahead of a protest against price hikes organised by the
Coalition Against Inflation (Protes).
At about 2.45pm, seven PAS party volunteers, including one woman, were picked
up outside the KLCC Jalan Ampang entrance and brought to the Kuala Lumpur
police contingent headquarters for questioning.
Almost simultaneously, near the Ampang Park LRT station, another five women and
three men were also detained in connection with the rally.
Malaysiakini reporter Syed Jamal Zahiid was also picked up. He was detained
while questioning a police officer over several arrests near the Ampang Park
area.
Malaysiakini office has contacted Dang Wangi OCPD Zulkarnain Abdul Rahman to
vouch for the identity of Syed Jamal who then assured that the journalist would
be released after giving his statement.
At about 3.30pm, about 200 Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) supporters marching
from Ampang Park towards KLCC were locked in a standoff with the police.
Ten minutes later, at least 12 PSM supporters and leaders were arrested after a
minor scuffle with the police.
Police have declared the rally today illegal and have obtained a rare court
order banning people from attending.
Commenting on the court order, PSM president Dr Nasir Hashim said the police
were using the courts to curtail fundamental liberties.
Its a very funny court order. People are just walking around and they are
being taken away. I think the lawyers should challenge this because we cannot
express your grievances in this country, he said.

Stop preventing peaceful assembly
The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) is concerned that the police
continues to prevent a citizen's right to freedom of assembly, as seen by the
latest warning issued to the Coalition Against Inflation (Protes), which has
planned an assembly this Saturday, 26 Jan.
On 25 Jan, national news agency BERNAMA reported the warning by Dang Wangi
police chief ACP Zulkarnain Abdul Rahman, against the group holding the
assembly. He reportedly said that the group has yet to apply for a permit,
which means the assembly will be illegal.
CIJ stresses that freedom of assembly, as guaranteed under the Constitution,
should not be restricted under the pretext of security. A country which claims
to be democratic should allow the public to assemble peacefully without having
to apply for a permit. This has also been recommended by the Human Rights
Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM).
In May 2006, police broke up an assembly in front of KLCC to protest rising
prices. According to the findings by SUHAKAM's public inquiry, 10 were injured
due to excessive force by the police and 20 others arrested. It has since been
dubbed the Bloody Sunday.
CIJ is concerned that the warning by the police only causes fear among the
public and deters them from attending the assembly to express an issue of
importance to them.
We urge the police to allow the assembly to go on without resorting to any
interventions and to provide a safe environment for people to gather peacefully.
