Hot and dusty, the new arrival in town was keen to put his finger on the
pulse of local culture.

Pulling into a popular coffee shop in Dubai, he approached a group of
expatriate women enjoying a leisurely lunch.

Where, he asked, might he find some Emiratis? The startled women sipped
thoughtfully on their lattes and knitted their brows together in collective
bewilderment.
