We are using the Hippo JMSBridge 1.01.03 on JBoss. Whenever I shut down the
JBoss server instance, the JMS Bridge keeps trying to reconnect, so the
instance can't come down.

Is this some configuration error?
The only thing I can think of right now, is that maybe you don't have
<useShutdownHook>false</useShutdownHook> in your activemq
broker-config.xml.
