I wrote a little tool to upload content that sets only the following properties:

caption
type
index

This allows me to edit.
Caption is not needed I think, but my file names differ from what I want to see on screen. Index is only interesting if the order in the folder is significant and things need to be moved up/down. We have content without index that cannot be moved.

So, in fact, I think all you need is type (named as in types.xml).
Correct. Just setting the type will allow editing. Also setting the caption and index is 'better', but setting a correct index number would require some extra query to find the highest current index number.

if I write a document (content type) to the repo via the java adapter,
what metadata needs to be set for the CMS to recognize its type and
allow editing for it - type, and ???
