Could you sniff the http traffic in both cases with a tool like Charles
[1]? Also, if you have a 500 server side error there should be something
in the repository logs. Could you check the logs of the repository and
send the error if you see one?
You can also try an option in the httpclient called "Preemptive
Authentication" [2]. It should force the client to send the BasicAuth
header immediately.
