Hi David,
Sun will support Java 1.5 until October 2009 (which they announced in
April this year), so there is still some time left ;)
We will probably not support Java 1.6 for Hippo CMS 6. Although if
someone comes up with a patch to make it work I will be more than happy
to apply it.
We are currently working in Hippo CMS 7 which will run on Java 1.5 and
Java 1.6.

Yes it is the version of Java that is causing the problem.
I've just downloaded JDK1.5 and changed the JAVA_HOME location and the
cms is working. Now the fun begins :-)
I noticed from Sun's site that version 1.5 entered end of life on April
8th 2008! Not that we should be scared about that of course but more
and more developers like myself will be coming to the party expecting
1.6 to work.

convenience but manually install it on remote servers. Thanks for the
tip about running multiple versions on the same machine.
