Know the problem well. Just had two of my machines go legs up, and
annoyingly the replacement kit was already being commissioned :( So
much easier when you can look at the files on the old system, but a
night in the freezer has allowed access long enough to pull the
missing material here ...
I know of an old drum memory with fixed heads ... used for decades at
one establishment.
It was much prised .. it did not fail, just did not have the memory size
required for newer stuff.
But it was quick and reliable. The bearings were replace a number of
times as preventative maintenance. And the motor too.
A number of times programmers were paid to write stuff to use it with
newer programs - the speed was extremely good.
I think it has been retired ... just not enough space to meet the
demands of modern programmers.
And the new SSDs are fairly good speed wise.
