I have in principal compiled Hive 0.3.0 release with Hadoop-0.20.0 after using Justin's patch and some other tweaks and able to create tables at least with select * queries. Will update once I am able to run more extensive tests, so would second Ashish opinion that Hadoop-0.20.0 is not yet the best version for use with Hive-0.3.0
