I haven't tried jboss and i'm not sure if it supports JMX 1.2 already. Latest version on sourceforge is from 2003. The site documentation doesn't seem to be up to date either.
The documentation includes a quickstart tutorial. You should try MX4J or Java 1.5. MX4J is used for compilation. You can find the libraries in the ext-package/lib folder after a build. Java 1.5 doesn't need any additional jars at all (not true today but after the next patch coming soon).
I hope to find the time to add some example code to the repository.

What's the easiest way to play around with the JMX integration? JBoss?

I just finished applying Achim's JMX patch. For me, that was the last functionality barrier to a beta release and I'd like to proceed. A vote of +1 indicates support for an immediate 1.1-beta-1 release of HiveMind.
