Malaysian youths turn to Internet for casual sex: report
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 (AFP) - young people in Malaysia are turning to the
Internet to meet sexual partners, according to a survey published Friday.
Out of 118 respondents who met their virtual acquaintances on a local
website -- www.cari.com.my. -- 18.6 percent of them said they had
"consensual sex," the New Straits Times reported.
The survey, conducted by the Malaysian Youth Council amid concern over abuse
of the Internet by young people, also said 22 percent sought marriage
partners, 57.6 percent wanted casual acquaintainces and six percent for
other purposes.
Council spokesperson Norizan Sharif was quoted as saying that 35.6 percent
of respondents, mostly females, reported being sexually harassed over the
Internet. But no rape or other sexual coercion was reported by those who met
their acquaintances.
The council urged Internet industry associations and computer professionals
to discuss various social problems arising from the development of
information technology.
"The council feels people should make Internet-surfing a family activity.
Parents should note the time their child spends on the net as prolonged and
late-night use may suggest abuse," Norizan added.
