Israeli Convicted Over Pig's Head
By SARI BASHI Associated Press Writer

JERUSALEM (AP) - A Jewish extremist was convicted Tuesday of plotting to
deface a Muslim grave with a pig's head.

Avigdor Eskin, however, was acquitted of the most serious charge against him
- conspiring to throw a pig's head into Islam's third holiest site, in
Jerusalem, during prayers.

A second extremist, Damian Peckovich, was convicted in March of sedition in
the planned attack against the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, a plot a judge said
could have led to war with the Muslim world.

The pig is ritually impure to Muslims, and the attack was to have taken
place during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Judge Yehudit Tzur found Eskin guilty of instructing Peckovich to place a
pig's head on the grave of Izzedine al-Qassam, a Muslim cleric killed in
guerrilla warfare with the British rulers of Palestine in 1935. The head was
put on the grave in September 1997.

He also found Eskin guilty of plotting with Peckovich to set fire to the
Jerusalem office of Dor Shalom, a peace group established by Yuval Rabin,
son of slain Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. The office was damaged in the
arson attack but nobody was hurt.

Eskin did not physically participate in either of the crimes, but gave
Peckovich detailed instructions, the judge said. Peckovich was convicted in
both incidents in March.

Eskin said he would appeal the convictions. ``The state wanted to prosecute
me for my political views,'' he told reporters.

Defense lawyer Naftali Werzberger said his client's involvement in the
crimes was ``marginal'' and that the judge was biased because of Eskin's
stated admiration for Yitzhak Rabin's assassin Yigal Amir.

Eskin served four months in jail in 1997 for placing a death curse on Rabin
two weeks before his November 1995 assassination.

Eskin was to remain free on bail but confined to his residential
neighborhood in Jerusalem until he is sentenced following a Nov. 4 hearing.
His convictions carry a maximum jail term of 10 years.
