Anwar says Malaysia’s current finance minister was corrupt womaniser

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 (AFP) - Malaysia’s sacked deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim
Monday accused the current finance minister of corruption and sexual
misconduct, saying Daim Zainuddin had "squandered billions" and flown women
into the country in his private jet.
Giving evidence for the second day in his sodomy trial, Anwar made more
allegations designed to show that Daim and others had conspired to
frame him on criminal charges because he threatened to expose
corruption.Anwar, sacked as finance minister and deputy premier in September
1998, was jailed for six years in April for using his official position to
cover up allegations of homosexual and heterosexual misconduct.
Anwar could face up to 20 years’ jail if convicted of sodomy. He says he is
the victim of a top-level conspiracy and his lawyers plan to call Prime
Minister Mahathir Mohamad to the stand Thursday.
Judge Arifin Jaka objected to Monday’s line of questioning by Anwar’s
lawyers, saying it was irrelevant to the sodomy charge. But Christopher
Fernando said they were trying to show "bad blood" between Anwar and Daim
which led the latter to fabricate evidence.
Anwar had Friday named senior politicians whom he said plotted to bring
charges against him because he threatened to expose graft.
He said then that Daim, who was special functions minister before taking
over from Anwar as finance minister, had conspired with Attorney General
Mohtar Abdullah to bring him to court.
Anwar said Friday that shortly before he was sacked he had drawn alleged
cases of corruption involving top politicians, including International
Trade Minister Rafidah Aziz, to Mahathir’s attention.
Asked Monday what Mahathir’s reaction had been, Anwar replied: "The prime
minister felt uneasy and was angry when I repeatedly raised the
allegations."
The prosecution objected to the evidence but Fernando told the court: "We
want to show how things were festering until finally it boiled over,
leading to fabricated charges being thrown at Anwar."
Judge Arifin ruled that evidence of a conspiracy to oust Anwar was
irrelevant. "What is relevant is conspiracy to fabricate evidence to say he
committed sodomy."
He told Anwar: "You have a lot of grouses against the PM but this is not the
platform."
Anwar said he met Daim again two to three days after his meeting with
Mahathir. He said Daim told him he had had a further meeting with
Attorney-General Mohtar Abdullah, who is prosecuting in the current trial.
"He (Daim) again advised me to resign to avoid any embarrassment to me and
my family but I objected very strongly.
"I asked him why he has the audacity to fabricate such malicious lies about
my alleged corruption and sexual misconduct when it is public knowledge that
he has squandered billions from the country and has been using his private
jet to bring in women from abroad, using his VIP status to bypass customs
and immigration," Anwar said.
He said he warned Daim: "Don’t fabricate lies."
Asked about other clashes between him and Daim, Anwar said he helped procure
an overseas banking licence for Daim.
"There is an understanding that once you have a bank overseas, you do not
disturb the financial institutions here. But he reneged on the understanding
and he wanted to buy a bank here."
Judge Arifin again complained the evidence was not relevant but allowed it
after legal argument.
Anwar said Daim wanted to buy the local Hock Hua Bank. "It was not approved
initially but subsequently approved on the instructions of the
prime minister."
He said Daim wanted to change the bank’s name. At first this was not
approved "but I subsequently approved it because of the prime minister’s
intervention."
The judge then ruled that enough evidence of "bad blood" with Daim had been
given. "You have to adduce evidence to show he fabricated the
(sodomy) charge."
The trial, in which Anwar and his Indonesian adopted brother Sukma Darmawan
are accused of sodomising Azizan Abu Bakar, is continuing.
