JERUSALEM, Oct 26 (AFP) - Israel and Mauritania will upgrade their ties to
full diplomatic relations and hold a signing ceremony in Washington on
Thursday to launch them, the ministry of foreign affairs said Tuesday.
"Foreign Minister David Levy will sign on Thursday in Washington an
agreement to have full diplomatic relations with Mauritania, a Muslim
country and a member of the Arab League," a statement issued by the
ministry said.
"The ceremony will take place at the state department. Secretary of State
Madeleine Albright decided to invite Levy and Mauritanian Foreign Minister
Ahmed Ould Sid'Ahmed to Washington after hearing that (Israel and
Mauritania) were ready to sign an agreement," the statement added.
Levy and Sid'Ahmed met in New York on September 24 in a meeting organised
by the United States aimed at enhancing diplomatic relations between
Israel and Muslim countries, it said.
Levy met representatives of 12 Arab governments and other countries on
that occasion, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session.
Albright and her Russian counterpart Igor Ivanov also attended.
Martin Indyk, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs and
Eitan Bentzur, Director General of Israel's foreign ministry had worked
together to bring about this agreement, the foreign ministry statement
said.
"The US administration and Israel view this agreement as an encouraging
sign for normalisation (with Muslim countries) which is believed by
everyone to be the purpose of the peace process," the statement said.
Israel and Mauritania currently have economic interest sections in
Nouakchott and Tel Aviv respectively.
Mauritania's foreign minister visited Israel in October last year and met
with Israeli officials.
Two other Maghreb countries, Tunisia and Morocco, have also launched ties
with Israel since the 1993 Oslo peace process was launched.
