Malaysia PM says unsure if right time for polls
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir
Mohamad
said on Monday that he did not know if it was the right time to call
general elections.
Mahathir must call elections by mid-2000, but he is believed to be
considering holding them earlier, perhaps as soon as this month. There
has
been speculation that, with the federal budget for 2000 out of the way,
Mahathir might dissolve parliament this week.
The prime minister was asked by reporters after visiting a local
business
if it was the right time to call elections insofar as fresh allegations
against his jailed former deputy, Anwar Ibrahim, surfaced last week.
Anwar
denied the allegations.
``Don't know, left or right. I don't know whether it is the right
time,''
Mahathir said.
Opposition politicians had questioned whether the new allegations of
improprieties against Anwar last week signalled that Mahathir might call
polls soon.
