The Opposition Trap
There is a letter circulating in town that is supposedly from the Prime
Minister�s
Department. The letter was faxed to all the Webmasters as well as the
newspapers. I
got one in my fax machine and imagine my shock when it showed "Jabatan
Perdana
Menteri". The letter is a Memo from Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir to Tun Daim
and the
contents are as follows:
"Saya berharap saudara dapat usahakan terkanan terhadap Datuk Murad
Khalid supaya
beliau dapat membuat kenyataan palsu tentang kedudukan kewangan Anwar.
Saya telah
arahkan Peguam Negara supaya menarik balik tuduhan diatas kedudukan
kewangan beliau
sebanyak 23 juta semasa menjadi Penolong Gabenor Bank Negara. Sila
maklum kepada saya
segera dan rancangan ini hendaklah dilaksanakn sebelum pembentangan
Belanjawan Negara
pada 29 Okt 99 yang saudara akan bentang".
It is signed by Mahathir and is addressed to Tun Daim in what is
supposed to be
Mahathir�s own handwriting.
Well, what do you think? Is this for real or just a hoax? It sure looks
too good to be
true. Would Mahathir be so stupid that he would put something so
incriminating in
writing? And why does Mahathir need to explain so much like who Murad
was, the amount
Murad is under pressure for, the Belanjawan to be tabled (when to be
tabled and who
will table it), and so on? Wouldn�t Daim already know all these details
that Mahathir
need not spell them all out?
At first look it seems like a "secret document" leaked out. But when you
study it
closer, it mentions too much details that need not be specified and
would
automatically be known by Daim. If Mahathir really did write this Memo,
then either
Mahathir thinks Daim is so stupid everything needs to be clarrified or
else Daim will
not understand, or Mahathir is so stupid he thought no one would know,
so it was safe
to be explicit.
I think it�s more the case of the writer of the letter that is stupid
for trying to
pass this Memo from Mahathir to Daim as the real thing.
But who is the writer of this letter? Of late many "secret documents"
are being leaked
out from the Prime Minister�s office. Take the Bank of Israel loan
document that was
circulated a while ago. Now we all know it was planted for the
Alternative parties to
bite at, and bite they did.
Then there was that so-called letter from Anwar that Mahathir gleefully
brandished at
the last UMNO General Assembly. Mahathir showed it up for the world to
see and
commented that it was typed and had no letterhead or signature. In this
letter Anwar
was supposed to have accused Daim of smuggling RM2 billion out of the
country in a
suitcase. Mahathir then confirmed it couldn�t be done as, from his own
experience, the
most he could squeeze into TWO suitcases was RM1 million, and even then
it was very
heavy.
Later that day the real letter from Anwar DID appear all over town and
it was in his
own handwriting and, though it did mention corruption, abuse of power,
and so on, it
DID NOT mention anything at all about the RM2 billion Daim was supposed
to have
smuggled out.
Taking all these previous incidences into consideration, it looks like
someone else is
producing all these letters and "secret documents". And it looks like
they have been
done to either embarrass the Alternative Parties (as if these letters
came from them)
or to mislead the Alternative Parties (by hoping that the Alternative
Parties will
jump at these letters and broadcast or circulate them).
Members of the public need to be careful. Not everything is what they
are made out to
seem. There will be many more of such letters and "secret documents"
that are going to
be circulated in time to come, especially as we get closer to the
general elections.
This is all part of UMNO�s dirty tricks campaign.
What�s next? "REFORMASI supporters" in PAS or keADILan T-shirts smashing
up cars and
beating up people? Maybe we should all stop wearing Alternative Party
T-shirts so that
when someone who is does something illegal or violent, we will all know
they are UMNO
people in disguise.
