> Christians Rally in Malaysia
> By Alvin Ung
> Associated Press Writer
> Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999; 1:09 p.m. EST
>
> KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia As a muezzin called for
evening
> prayers from a nearby mosque, a fiery Argentine
evangelist
> challenged the 50,000-strong crowd of Christians to
repent
> and renew their faith in Jesus Christ.
>
> "God is here right now," boomed Carlos Annacondia as
he
> stood at the podium of the massive Bukit Jalil
national
> stadium Saturday night. "He is here to deliver you.
Come
> forward to the feet of Jesus."
>
> While a swaying sea of Christians lifted their hands
in
> prayer to commemorate the end of the millennium and
to
> celebrate Christmas, hundreds of people streamed
across the
> soccer field toward the stage. Dozens in wheelchairs
> clustered nearby for healing, while others wept.
>
> The free-of-charge "Emmanuel Celebration," held
Saturday,
> Sunday and Monday, is the largest ever gathering of
> Christians in Muslim-dominated Malaysia, where
cities,
> villages and paddy fields are dotted with mosques
and
> minarets.
>
> Evangelical Christians, who are mostly minority
ethnic
> Chinese and Indians, comprise less than 5 percent of
the
> country's 22 million population.
>
> Ethnic Malays were notably absent from the rally.
The
> Malaysian Constitution, which allows for freedom of
> religion for all races, also stipulates that Malays,
who
> make up 60 percent of the population, must embrace
Islam.
> Non-Muslims are strictly prohibited from
proselytizing to
> Muslims.
>
> While the government generally respects the right of
> worship for non-Muslims, many state governments
carefully
> control the building of their places of worship and
> allocation of land for their cemeteries.
>
> Just last month, the fundamentalist Pan-Malaysian
Islamic
> Party, or PAS, gained control of two out of the
country's
> 13 states in the general elections.
>
> Residents in the oil-rich state of Terengganu voted
in a
> Muslim firebrand, Abdul Hadi Awang, who has
repeatedly
> attempted to pass a law requiring the death sentence
for
> Muslims who renounce their faith.
>
> But some Christian leaders say they are unfazed by
life
> under Islam.
>
> "Within an Islamic context, we're not in such a
difficult
> position as compared with the Middle East," Wong Kim
Kong,
> secretary-general of the 700,000 member National
> Evangelical Christian Fellowship. An application to
use the
> stadium for the event was swiftly granted by the
> authorities, he said.
>
> Christian leaders here say that the preacher, a
factory
> owner turned evangelist, has converted up to 2
million
> people over the past 17 years. Many regard him as
the Billy
> Graham of Latin America.
>
> "He preaches with real authority," said Paul Kiat, a
> sessions court judge, who said she was planning to
bring
> the rest of her family to the rally on Sunday. "I
was
> touched by God tonight."
