Malaysian PM calls off visit to Switzerland
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 (AFP) - Malaysian Prime
Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who is on vacation, has
cancelled a one-week official visit to Switzerland
this week, aides said Sunday.
The premier will skip the annual World Economic
Forum in Davos where he is scheduled to deliver a
keynote address and participate in a cultural
dialogue, an official who asked not to be named told
AFP.
The official did not give any reason why the
Switzerland trip was called off.
He said Mahathir, who left Kuala Lumpur on January
12 for a two-week break in Argentina and the
Caribbean, would instead fly to London to continue his
vacation.
The premier will stick to his plans to make a brief
visit to Paris on January 29 to meet French President
Jacques Chirac to discuss bilateral and international
issues, the official said.
Mahathir is now scheduled to return home on
February 1, two days earlier than originally
scheduled, he added.
This was the premier's first long break in over two
years since May 1997, when he took a two-month
vacation abroad and appointed then deputy Anwar
Ibrahim as acting premier.
The premier sacked Anwar in September 1998 and
appointed Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, a former foreign
minister, as his fourth deputy in January last year.
Mahathir, 74, is Malaysia's longest serving premier
and will celebrate his 19th anniversary in power on
July 16.
After winning another five-year term in the
November 29 general election, he said this would be
his last term and has openly backed Abdullah as his
successor.
