KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13 (AFP) - A veteran Malaysian
opposition figure said Sunday he would stay in
politics despite some calls for him to quit after his
party's
"catastrophic" results in last November's elections.
"I will soldier on and continue my commitment to the
cause of a new Malaysia of justice, freedom, democracy
and good governance," said Lim Kit Siang, chairman of
the Chinese-dominated Democratic Action Party (DAP).
Lim, who entered parliament in 1969 and was twice
jailed without trail under an internal security law,
said he now expected to stay in politics as long as
his old adversary, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
Lim quit in December as party secretary general after
what he called its "catastrophic" election setback and
was appointed chairman. Despite electoral reverses for
the ruling coalition, the DAP won just 10 seats
compared to nine in the previous election.
Lim, 58, lost his parliamentary seat along with deputy
chairman Karpal Singh and the then-chairman Chen Man
Hin.
Despite the switch of party job, Lim continues to
overshadow the current secretary general Kerk Kim
Hock. But at a press conference Sunday he acknowledged
that Kerk was party leader.
Mahathir, 74, announced after his election victory
that this would be his last term in office. Despite
some speculation that Mahathir may retire sooner
rather than later, Lim said he expected the premier to
finish his term.
He said a "tightening of the screws" in the past two
months -- including the arrest of four leading
opposition figures -- "indicates he is preparing for a
long haul."
