Malaysia may buy Russian helicopter fleet
KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 (AFP) - Malaysia is
considering buying a fleet of Russian
Mi-17 multi-role helicopters to replace
the air force's ageing Sikorsky S-71A models,
Defence Minister Najib Tun Razak said
Tuesday.
Najib, quoted by the official Bernama news
agency, said the air force may consider
buying a fleet of 10 initially. He did not
specify which version or the costs involved.
Currently two Mi-17s are in service with
the fire and rescue service.
Najib, speaking after opening the Defence
Services Asia Exhibition near Kuala Lumpur,
said technical specifications and other
matters still had to be agreed.
"We've not yet gone into actual contract.
Still negotiating," he said.
The air force acquired 16 Russian MiG-29
fighter jets and two MiG-29UB combat trainers
under a 1994 contract.
