Assalamu alaikum
Firstly, an expose of Hamza and Nuh Keller is due soon inshaAllah. Yet the issue of
Hamza is more directly related to the beliefs of sufiism. The curriculum of Hamza's
Zaytuna Institute teaches the works of Nuh Ha Mim Keller, a Shadhili Sufi who's books
are filled with quotes and heretical
concepts from sufi leaders, such as prayer to the dead, prayer to the angels, total
obedience to the shaykh, etc. One can also notice that they teach the Prophet's sirah
using Martin Lings' book, "Muhammad", a text laden with fabricated and unauthentic
narrations, by an author who espouses reincarnation. Hamza himself publically
advocates these very same ideas
when he quotes the major ideologues of Sufism, such as Abu Yazeed
Al-Bastami, Al-Hallaj, Ibn Arabi, etc.
Under the guise of teaching people "the dissemination of traditional Islam as
understood by the rightly-guided scholars of the people of Sunnah and Jama'a." (by
"traditional" he means Sufiism), he prepares people to study and propogate the ideas
of Sufis by sending them to Mauritania and Syria,
headquarters of Shadhili and Naqshbandi Sufism.
As a side point, a former Hamza Yusuf follower once stated that Hamza's biography
makes no mention of the fact that Ian Dallas (also known as Abdul Qaadir As-Sufi
Al-Murabit), is Hamza Yusuf's former father-in-law. If true, this would be a fraternal
link to the early 1980's when Ian Dallas sent a number of his followers (Yusuf?), to
study under Sufis in Mauritania. At
that time, the same principles that Zaytuna today claims, were being used by Abdul
Qaadir As-Sufi. Ian Dallas' group today produces books out of Turkey under the pen
name, "Harun Yahya". In the book "Evolution Deceit", they decry Darwin while praising
Ataturk, the one who destroyed Islam in Turkey.
Because of Hamza's charismatic personality and manner of discussing current issues,
some youth (the majority of whom are not grounded in issues of faith), find him
attractive. Similarly, the abrasive message which the khuloof have propagated in the
name of Salafiah, has driven numbers of
frustrated youth into the warm embrace of the Sufis. Yet upon closer inspection, the
embrace carries with it a stench.
There are now Muslims who believe that Sufism is the original path of Islam and that
non-Sufism is deviation. It was for this reason that Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips, used
the opportunity (via live teleconference) last summer at Madison Square Garden
in NY (with Hamza present) to inform the people about the truth behind Hamza and Nuh
Keller. As can be imagined, Hamza was not too pleased.
